According to a biography of Jeremiah McMann published in "History of Huron Co, Ohio, Vol. II," Jeremiah left home and struck out on his own at the age of 12. He learned to be a cooper, making or repairing casks and barrels. He arrived in Chicago in 1864 and lived there, practicing his trade, until 1871 when he moved to Wakeman, Huron County, Ohio. By then he was married to Julia Loun and had 3 sons. (This biography attributes Margaret's birthplace to Wakeman in 1872. However, before her death, Margaret Weisenberger, granddaughter of Margaret McMann, found evidence that Margaret McMann was born in 1868 in Illinois.) This source is the only printed mention of the son William that has been found thus far. However, on a visit to the Wakeman Cemetery, Margaret and this author made contact with the old caretaker, Pat Nolan, who remembered Richard McMann. When we questioned him about the mysterious "A. Clare" (see notes for Andrew Clare McMann), Mr. Nolan mentioned a younger brother, William, who had died in infancy.
The following is excerpted from the biography of John J. McMann as published in "History of Huron County Ohio Its Progress and Development," by A. J. Baughman :
Jeremiah McMann, "...a native of Ireland, left his home at the age of twelve years and from that time was dependent upon his own resources for a livelihood. He experienced many hardships and privations during the early period of his career, but never permitted himself to be overcome by any obstacles. By untiring perseverance and unfaltering industry, he learned the coopers trade and gradually worked his way upward until he became a large operator in his line of activity. In 1864, he arrived in Chicago, where he engaged in his trade until 1871, when he came to Wakeman, where he spent the remaining days of his life. He operated a large cooperage in this city and became very prosperous in his business enterprise. A man of great force of character, he possessed a strong personality, and was known throughout the community for his charitable and humanitarian traits. A man who acquired money easily, he gave liberally of his means to the poor and needy and no worthy person in distress ever sought his aid in vain, so that when he passed away on the 30th of September, 1898, his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret. He was laid to rest in the Wakeman cemetery, while his wife still survives him. Their family consisted of five children, namely: John J., Jerre H., Richard, Margaret and William..."

From the "Norwalk Daily Reflector," Norwalk, Ohio, published Saturday, October 1, 1898:
"SUICIDE IN WAKEMAN"
"Jerry McMann, an old resident of Wakeman, committed suicide Friday afternoon in his barn, by shooting himself in the heart with a revolver, and when he was found his shirt was open and the weapon was lying by his side. He was always in good spirits and there is no known reason why he should have committed the deed. He leaves a family consisting of a wife, three sons, and a daughter."
